Hi, I'm new to this forum, joined about 2 minutes ago! I just had to tell somebody that would understand that I just received a shippment of Blue Moscow guppies and another of Purple Moscows and I'm so excited. One of the sellers sent 18 instead of the 10 stated in the bid and the other sent 8 when the bid was for 2! Guess I lucked out, either that or guppy people are just naturally generous! I used the drip method to get them used to my tank water and I have seen no signs of stress at all, they all look quite happy. The one who sent 8 also sent along a few fry! Some of the fry are very very small, they were in with the bigger fish in the bag and survived so I hope they will not get eaten in my tank! I also, fortunately, got the duck weed that I had ordered. I had a few moments of concern when I added the duck weed because it went all through the water and looked like a green snow storm! However, it has calmed down now and there is only a little still not on the top. The guppies seem to enjoy this, they actually look like they're swimming just far enough below it to get rubbed by the roots, they are also eating the free floating stuff. I also have 2 Purple Mystery Snails and 2 common pleco's. Both the snails and the pleco's came out to take a good look at the new comers and then went back to doing their own thing! I have 2 apon plants and 3 marimo balls coming this week, a few more guppies, not many, and probably next month a big piece of Cypress driftwood. I do have a question though, do Purple Moscows ever throw aquamarine colored off-spring? I have two of the most gorgeous looking Moscows with a light aquamarine spot on each side of their bodies and tail fins with the same color - they really are beautiful as the aquamarine kind of glows. Believe me I'm not complaining, just curious! I have a 30 gal tank. I also got a complete 10 gal set up (and I mean complete, everything is there) the tank is an old one circa the 50's or 60's with chrome framing all around the sides and top and bottom, for $10 which I have cleaned up and started cycling for fry. I haven't had fish for many years and I feel like a little kid on Christmas morning right now! Oh, I have an Eclipse 3 filtration system going and it seems to be doing very well.
I'd welcome any suggestions, questions etc. that anyone has. I'm still looking for Green Moscows at a reasonable price! Tongue
Sounds like you have a great setup and got really lucky with those bids! I love how the tails look on blue moscows.
Thanks! The tails are what got me too, they seem to be a smaller bodied guppy than many others. My tank should look pretty full with around 30 guppies in it, but many are still too young to breed and 5 or 6 of those are new babies! I love watching them swim around and play. Did you know they eat duck weed? I got some a couple days ago and had to make a kind of "corral" for it (a piece of air tubing with one side of one end split and then shoved together), it worked and my filter isn't getting clogged anymore! Also you can't really see the air hose which is nice.
I have some trouble with duckweed. It gets so thick I have to spoon it out and throw it away because it covers the entire water surface, sometimes a centimeter thick. It can reproduce from even the smallest scrap stuck to a net and gets transferred tank to tank that way. I think it is because I live in MN and the water has a lot of iron in it. All my plants go nuts and have to be hacked back so the fish have room to swim, get to the fish food, etc.
I use java moss in the maternity tanks and I always have to thin that so the moms don't get stuck in a thick patch during those last days when they want to find a good hiding place.
I love Moscows, too. The aquamarine you're seeing is an indication of what a green moscow looks like. Probably you could select for that and get a greater proportion of green out of your fish, but the other moscow colors are also magnificent.

p.s. if anybody ever has trouble with their duckweed, the best way to get rid of some is to just scoop it up in a coarse fish net and let the water drain/make sure there aren't any fish in that scoop, then tap it vigorously against the side of a trash can. You can shake most of the duckweed out of the net that way.
ChrisOE, I'm in Minnesota too, the Iron Range in fact so I know what you mean by iron in the water!!!!!!
The guppies have pretty well taken care of the duck weed problem! They eat the darned stuff! Voracious little fish, they ate almost all of it so I took some out and put it in a bucket to save it for the small tank I have and I put it in the smaller tank, old filter system no problem with the duck weed, and darned if the guppies aren't eating that too!
I'm looking for quite a bit of Java Moss because I want to make a moss wall for the large tank since the back of it is black but I'm super broke for the rest of this month so I'll just keep looking for awhile!
I'm glad I've got a couple Green Moscows in there along with the others, they are sooooo very pretty.
The other two plants I have (apons) seem to be growing pretty well, at least they haven't died yet. Considering I have no substrata for them, just river rocks and gravel, I'm a bit surprised but time will tell! If real plants won't grow, I'll try some of those realistic looking silk ones, the plastic ones are too stiff for my liking.
Water plants get a lot of their nutrients from the water, so you probably don't need to worry a lot about anything but gravel and rocks. If you're planning to be in the Twin Cities for the State Fair or anything, let me know. I'd be happy to give you a big wad of java moss.
